US News & World Report Ranks Lancaster as the Best Place to Retire

A home builder specializing in resort-style amenities and maintenance-free living, Traditions of America constructs new home communities catered to buyers aged 55 and up. Recently, Traditions of America highlighted a ranking that named Lancaster, Pennsylvania, home to its Lititz community, the number-one place to retire in the U.S.

A multi-platform publisher, U.S. News & World reports information and news through its website and annual e-book and print publications. It recently released a list of the Best Places to Retire in the U.S., of which Lancaster outranked 124 other cities.

The livability of Lancaster achieved a 6.7 ranking overall, with strong scores in the quality of life and value categories. The cost of living was calculated as affordable compared to other leading metropolitan areas in part because home prices compare favorably to the national median home sale price. Additionally, the city is small, which puts most attractions within close proximity to residents. The city has many fun activities to tap into, such as First Friday art walks and, during the winter, numerous indoor sports to enjoy.

The Social Benefits of Living in an Active Lifestyle Community

Living up to its motto of “Live better,” Traditions of America develops new homes within communities that offer residents a maintenance-free, active lifestyle. Traditions of America's onsite amenities, such as tennis courts and a clubhouse with a gourmet kitchen, encourage social interaction.

Essential for strong mental health and a sense of well-being, social interaction is encouraged by living in an active lifestyle community, where residents can easily forge friendships with their neighbors and engage in their favorite hobbies. Active lifestyle communities counteract many of the social effects of retirement and aging, such as empty nest syndrome and the loss of a social network at a job. Active lifestyle communities offer opportunities to develop new friendships through meaningful social activities.

Inclement weather and low temperatures can reduce mobility, which leads to fewer visits from family members and fewer trips away from home. To counteract these issues, active lifestyle communities host many onsite events that are accessible at all times of the year.

In addition, people are more likely to maintain healthy behaviors, such as exercise, if their peers have similar habits. Living near fitness amenities, such as tennis courts, encourages the development of friendships based on physical activities.

Considerations for Model Home Visits

Pennsylvania-based homebuilder Traditions of America constructs active lifestyle communities with desirable amenities and well-designed houses for home buyers over the age of 55. To give potential buyers a first-hand look at the exceptional craftsmanship and style that goes into every home, Traditions of America offers tours of its model homes.

Model home tours give buyers the ability to understand the builder’s style and be inspired by the features that can be incorporated into their future home. Buyers should prepare for home tours by making the following considerations:

- Research the builder. Model homes generally feature floor plans and design choices that have the broadest appeal. However, home buyers with more specific tastes should visit the builder’s website to get a better idea of the range of available models and see if any of these options are closer to their wants and needs.

- Know the layout. Before visiting a model home, buyers should request and review the floor plans. If the layout is missing a crucial feature, such as a first-floor bedroom or office space, buyers will be ready to ask during the tour if these modifications are possible.

- Ask about upgrades. Not every feature in a model home is part of the standard package. While most agents inform potential buyers about upgrades and their prices, buyers who are in doubt should ask.
